Heh... Joke's on the exam writer: the article "a(n)" isn't related to the answers at all. It describes the word "example", which is ALWAYS preceded by "an". You would never say "a example", only "an example". Thus, the parentheses are unnecessary.
If you're reading the archives from season 1, click on comics to view them full size. That trick still works for season 2, but I don't think you need it.
